G. Christian Spencer, Georgia, launched Atlanta Specialty Woods in January 2009. After working in the golf industry for ten years, Mr. Spencer completed his communications degree at Kennesaw State University and started working for a company that salvaged old heart pine. As general manager of the 30-year-old business, he oversaw a two-year increase in total sales from $600K to $1.7M. After working there for three years, Mr. Spencer decided to leave and create his own business with fresh principles and a completely different outlook. As a result, Atlanta Specialty Woods was established in January 2009.
ASW started off like many other young businesses, with simply a few samples in a pickup truck and no warehouse. Customers started to value in-person material selection, and a hunt for the first warehouse was under way. In 2010, Mr. Spencer and a contractor friend of his discovered an 800-square-foot warehouse in Marietta and moved in together to share the space; Mr. Spencer sold wood and the buddy worked in the glass-cleaning industry. Mr. Spencer needed assistance as his new company continued to develop, and he was able to get it via acquaintances and other hiring firms. The two roommates discovered a building in Kennesaw, Georgia, that was four times larger as the firm continued to expand. They lived together in that building, and as ASW continued to expand, the roommate was compelled to look for a new place since it was taking up 75% of the Kennesaw building, which was intended to be divided 50/50.
